Bangkok prepares for heavy floods

Travellers to Thailand have been warned that flooding in Bangkok cannot be ruled out as the country suffers from its worst flooding in decades.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told people in Bangkok to be prepared for flooding there, describing the situation as “extremely serious”.

Three months of heavy monsoon rain have left swathes of the country flooded, led to the deaths of around 350 people and is expected to last for another four to six weeks, according to the PM.

Northern and central areas were worst hit initially but now the run-off is draining south, threatening Bangkok.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “The government of Thailand is working to prevent flooding in central Bangkok.

“Some outlying districts have been affected by the large volume of water coming from the north as it progresses towards the sea.

“The possibility of flooding spreading to parts of the city of Bangkok and disrupting fresh water and electricity supplies cannot be ruled out. A number of businesses and hotels have taken contingency measures.”

Thailand’s tourism industry has so far been largely unaffected, with southern islands escaping the flooding. The main international airport is operating as normal and its flood defences have been fortified.
