Death toll rises as Egypt violence escalates

British travellers to Egypt have been warned to avoid all crowds and demonstrations as the death toll from the latest uprising in the country rose to at least 26.

More than 1,750 others have been wounded after three days of violence involving protestors and security forces in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

Tens of thousands of protesters had assembled in the square last night following a day of fighting with police using tear gas in an effort to quell the crowd angry at the lack of change brought by the country’s military rulers since the ousting of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak earlier in the year.

Egypt’s civilian cabinet offered to resign after three days of clashes but the action failed to satisfy protesters.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice remains unchanged without travel restrictions to Egypt being imposed.

But the FCO said: “There are ongoing violent confrontations between security forces and security forces in Tahrir Square and the downtown area of Cairo.

“British nationals should avoid all crowds and demonstrations. The situation is changing rapidly and we recommend you follow events on local and international news and seek advice from tour operators.”

Demonstrations are also taking place in Alexandria, Suez, Port Said and at least six other cities across the country, according to the FCO.
