New ships to prompt 40% capacity hike

HOLLAND America Line is to increase passenger capacity by 40% to 14,560 berths by the end of 2000 following the launch of three new ships.

Zaandam and Volendam will debut in the Caribbean in January and March respectively, while Amsterdam will start an inaugural Panama Canal cruise in October.

The additions will bring the size of the fleet up to 11 five-star vessels. Marketing manager Carly Perkins said: “As we have got more ships we have got an expanded programme in a number of places.”

In Worldwide Cruise Holidays 2000, Holland America has introduced a year-round Caribbean programme. Prices start at £992 per person for a nine-night flycruise on Westerdam out of Fort Lauderdale.

Its presence in Europe will be increased to three ships for next summer. Prices start at £1,197 for a 10-night flycruise on Noordam out of Lisbon.
