Co-op Travel staff to relocate from Manchester

One hundred Co-operative Travel staff in Manchester learned they would be redeployed in the northwest yesterday.

The Thomas Cook, Co-operative Travel and Midlands Co-operative retail joint venture announced the relocation of staff to nearby offices in Altrincham and Accrington. The companies merged their retail businesses in October.

Another 76 staff at the Manchester office of The Co-operative Travel remain in consultation about potential redundancy, part of a 90-day process that began in October.

The Hanover building in Manchester where they work will close for refurbishment by the Co-operative Group and re-open next year.

A Thomas Cook spokesman said: “The office is not closing. The Co-operative will still be in Manchester. The building is being refurbished.”

He added: “Staff have known since the merger was announced [in October 2010] and it was confirmed in October.”

Simon Robinson, chief executive of the joint venture, said: “We’re pleased we’ve been able to update colleagues with the news that we are relocating their roles to our Altrincham and Accrington sites.”
