One of Istanbul’s leading tourist attractions was at the centre of a shootout between a gunman and police yesterday.
The assailant walked into Topkapi Palace and closed the doors at the entrance to the complex after shooting a soldier in the leg.
The gunman wounded three people with a pump action rifle before being killed by police in an hour-long gun battle.
A police officer, soldier and an unnamed tourist were wounded in the incident in the Sultanahmet district of the city yesterday. Turkish interior minister Idris Naim Sahin identified the 36 year old gunman as a Libyan national.
