Caution urged as Egypt referendum looms

Protests and disruption to travel around Egypt is likely as a referendum on a new constitution takes place today and tomorrow amid high levels of security.

The caution came in an updated travel advisory from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

“You are advised to take particular care in the vicinity of polling stations and government buildings, and to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings,” the FCO said.

“Before embarking on a journey seek information about any disruptions to your route and consider your travel plans carefully.”

Egypt’s interior ministry says 200,000 police officers, 150 central security units and 200 combat groups are being deployed around polling stations on both days.

The FCO reiterated its advice that protests, marches and demonstrations are common across Egypt.

“Demonstrations often happen on Fridays, but can occur at any time and with little prior notice.

“The atmosphere at demonstrations can change quickly and without warning. Police may use water cannon, tear gas, birdshot or live ammunition for crowd control,” the FCO said.
