Singapore Airlines backs Heathrow expansion

Singapore Airlines has become the latest carrier to support expansion of Heathrow.

The carrier ruled out Gatwick as the solution to the airport capacity crunch in the south-east of England.

Two options for expanding Heathrow with a third runway or an extension to an existing runway have been shortlisted by the Airports Commission together with a second runway at Gatwick.

But SIA executive vice president for commercial operations Mak Swee Wah told the Evening Standard on Friday: “London needs Heathrow and Heathrow needs more capacity.

“Gatwick has been talked about many times but we don’t think it works. It has a totally different profile in terms of the market, the connectivity and the other airlines.

“All the studies have shown you do need to concentrate in one hub where all the other connections are. There is no other solution to growth than more capacity at Heathrow.”

Mak added that the longer the runway issue remains unresolved, the more risk Heathrow ran of reputational damage.

“All you need is some slight weather disruption or something else and you can see everything turns chaotic, which is a problem when you are running at full capacity,” he reportedly said.

Speaking for fellow international airlines, he added: “All of us hope there will be a solution to this some day because when a decision is made it may be another 10 or 15 years before the next runway comes about.”

SAI expanded from three flights a day to four from Heathrow to Singapore more than a year ago after acquiring a par of take off and landing slots from South African Airways and was the first international carrier to operate the Airbus A380 from London.
