Child dies in pool tragedy onboard Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed the death of a child pulled from a swimming pool onboard Norwegian Breakaway.

The four-year-old died on board and another child aged six was airlifted to hospital by the US Coast Guard as the ship was off the coast of North Carolina yesterday (Monday).

The line confirmed the tragedy on its Facebook page, without identifying the genders of the children or where they were from.

“Our emergency medical team was called and notified that two small children were unresponsive on the pool deck,” the company said.

“The team responded immediately and quickly administered CPR to both children. The older child was then airlifted by the US Coast Guard to the closest medical facility, accompanied by his grandmother and a nurse from the ship.

“Devastatingly, the younger child passed away on board.”

Norwegian went on to extend its deepest sympathies to the family and said it was providing full assistance and support.

“The family is in our thoughts and prayers and we ask that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well,” the company said.

The 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway was launched last year and runs cruises from New York.
