First Choice ordered to pay £1.7m compensation after Turkey resort illness

First Choice has been ordered to pay out £1.7 million in compensation to Brits who fell ill at a Turkish resort.

According to the Daily Mail, the four-star Holiday Village resort in Sarigerme was inundated with complaints in 2009 after hundreds were left suffering from chronic gastric bugs.

Holidaymakers complained about dirty toilets, a lack of hot water and faeces in the swimming pool.

In total 160 children and 435 adults fell ill having stayed at the complex, some of which needed hospital treatment.

Deputy senior master Leslie sitting in the High Court in London ordered First Choice to pay the families involved up to £25,000 compensation each.

First Choice declined to comment.

First Choice agreed a £1.9m settlement of claims from more than 400 holidaymakers who stayed at the Bahia Principe resort in San Juan in 2013.

This followed settlements of over £3.5 million four years ago for 500 holidaymakers who had stayed at the same hotel at the same time with Thomas Cook and MyTravel.
