Travellers have to pay extra for breakfast in two out of three hotels with an average cost of €10.32.
Hotels in Singapore charge the most (€16.86) while those in Poland at €6.40 are the cheapest. The average price for a hotel breakfast in the UK is calculated at €13.91 (£11.60), according to a study out today by hotel solutions provider HRS.
Switzerland (€16.05) and in Belgium (€15.05) follow Singapore as charging the most for hotel breakfasts, while Latvia (€8.14) and Finland (€7.64) are among the best value.
Breakfast is more expensive in five-star hotels, but guests can typically choose from a wider range of food and drinks. The average price of a five-star breakfast in Switzerland is €31.19, in Germany €27.71 and in Belgium €27.50. A six-star hotel in Switzerland charges the top rate of €39.65 for breakfast.
According to a previous eResult study commissioned by HRS, one in seven business travellers (14.3%) request a “early bird” breakfast service which is served prior to the regular breakfast hours, which they are willing to pay extra for.
At least 15.8% of the hotels registered with HRS offer an early breakfast.
HRS UK managing director Jon West said: “We place real importance on transparency, and as such travellers can view in the hotel list whether breakfast is included in the price or if it is charged as an extra. Breakfasts are also rated by guests, which provides further information when it comes to choosing a hotel.”
