Severe Tropical Cyclone Ita has strengthened to category 5 – the most severe on the scale – and is forecast to bring hazardous sea and weather conditions to parts of northern Queensland, including Cairns tomorrow (Friday), according to an update from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

“Local warnings and watches are in place. You should monitor the bulletins issued by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and follow the advice issued by the local authorities, including any evacuation orders,” the FCO said.

Tropical cyclones occur mainly in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia between November and April.
