Shore excursions on the Honduran island of Roatán in the Caribbean have been suspended by Cruisingexcursions.com following the murder of a ship’s crew member.
The decision was made after a member of the crew on Norwegian Pearl (pictured) was shot dead a week ago.
It was the latest in a series of violent reported incidents affecting visitors to the island.
The company offered 11 excursions on Roatán ranging from sightseeing trips to fishing villages, visits to mangrove groves, iguana farms and beaches, to diving and fishing, to adventurous jungle zip-line adventures with walks on suspension bridges.
All forward bookings have been cancelled with full refunds.
Managing director Simon Purchase said: “A string of reports of robberies, violence against visitors and now this horrific murder have forced us to suspend our cruise excursion programme on this beautiful island.
“It is such a shame and very sad for the majority of law abiding island residents, especially those who make a living from tourism, but we cannot recommend cruisers go ashore until we are reassured that measures are in place to protect visitors.”
