Air New Zealand has ordered 14 new generation short-haul aircraft from Airbus.
The $1.5 billion deal includes 10 A320neo, one A320 and three A321s.
Airline chief executive Christopher Luxon said the new order would ensure Air New Zealand continued to operate one of the world’s youngest fleets.
“This new fleet will further enhance the experience for our customers and will drive fuel efficiency, enabling us to minimise our carbon footprint by saving around 3,600 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft per year,” he said, after announcing the order on the sidelines of the Iata annual meeting in Doha, Qatar.
The majority of the aircraft are due to be delivered between 2017 and 2019.
Air New Zealand has 105 aircraft in operation, 49 of which of jets and 56 of which are turbo-props.
Reports also suggest that Airbus is close to deciding whether to revamp its 20-year old A330.
Reuters reported Airbus sales head John Leahy as saying: “We’re studying it very carefully – watch this space.”
