New electronic tourist visas are to be introduced by Myanmar on September 1.
The tourst e-visas will cost $50, though the fee may change, said Aung Thiha, assistant director of the country’s immigration and population ministry’s office at Yangon international airport.
Tourists who apply online will receive the visa within one week, but it must be used within three months of issuance and will be valid for a visit of up to 28 days.
The ministry said tourists will be able to apply for the e-visas on its website but has yet to announce this on its website in English, according to local reports.
Officials said that after the tourist e-visa system is operating effectively other types of visas will be offered online.
The country aims to attract 3.1 million tourists this year, with the number expected to more than double to more than 7 million by 2020.
