Family Holiday Association aims to raise £250k through industry pledges

The Family Holiday Association charity is marking its 40th anniversary by inviting 500 people in the travel and tourism industry to help raise £250,000 with 500 pledges of £500.

The charity was founded in 1975 by Pat and Joan Laurance by asking 10 friends each for a £50 donation.

The 500 for 500 campaign was launched today, with each £500 pledge enabling the charity to send a family on a modest seven-night break in a caravan by the British seaside.

The charity is encouraging travel and tourism organisations and professionals to make multiple pledges so more families and their children can enjoy a short break away.

FHA chairman Alison Rice said: “We help some of the most disadvantaged families in the UK; families knocked sideways by dire circumstances.

“A short, simple break can really make a difference and help a family cope with whatever the future throws at them.”

The initiative was unveiled at the Elman Wall travel directors’ summit in London.

Charity ambassador and company director Deborah Potts said: “The Family Holiday Association really changes the lives of disadvantaged children and their families and is a cause very close to my heart.

“I am delighted that delegates and trade associations are supporting the 500 for 500 campaign so generously.

“Families in desperate circumstances who would otherwise never have a break will be able to experience what we all take for granted. For them, holidays become a lifeline – not a luxury.”

The charity has produced an A to Z of fundraising ideas to help companies wanting to use their 500 for 500 pledges as opportunities for team-building fun.
