As many as 24 people are reported to have been killed and 400,000 affected as a powerful cyclone hit India’s Andhra Pradesh and Orissa states.

Cyclone Hudhud wrecked homes, uprooted trees and power lines, blocked roads and damaged crops in the two states.

Heavy rains have been forecast in six states, prompting fears of flooding, the BBC reported.

The airport at the port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh – the city worst hit by Sunday’s cyclone – sustained severe damage and has been shut down. Part of the roof was blown off and the runway is under water.

Rescue workers and soldiers have begun moving trees that have blocked roads, restoring power and telecommunication lines and clearing up debris in Visakhapatnam.

The Indian air force is using aircraft and helicopters to drop food supplies in and around the city.
