UK and Canada close Cairo embassies

Canada has shut its embassy in Cairo due to “security concerns”, a day after the UK closed its own diplomatic mission in the Egyptian capital.

The Foreign and Commonwealth office confirmed that public services at the British Embassy in Cairo are currently suspended, although no explanation was given.

“Please do not come to the embassy building,” the FCO said. “British nationals in Egypt who need consular assistance should call 0227916000.”

The closure is believed to be linked to ongoing fears over security, although FCO travel advice to the country has not changed.

The area which the FCO advises against all but essential travel does not include tourist spots along the Nile river such as Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings or the Red Sea Resorts of Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.

However, the FCO maintains its stance over security threats, saying: “There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.

“Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning.

“Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners.

“Previous attacks have almost exclusively targeted the security forces, their facilities and other government buildings. You should take great care near these places.”

A message posted on the Canadian Cairo embassy website reads: “The ability to provide consular services may occasionally be limited for short periods due to unsettled security conditions.”

No other details have been given to explain the closure.
