At least 10 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters in Cairo on Sunday on the anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution.

Dozens of protesters were reported injured in the clashes after a woman protestor on a march in Cairo on Saturday was shot dead by police.

Protestors were also reported to have been killed in Egypt’s second city Alexandria.

The UK Foreign Office had warned British visitors in advance to “take extra care on 25 January [as] this is likely to be a period of increased tension”.

The protests marked the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising which toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.

Security in major cities was tightened ahead of the anniversary.

The deaths came as leisure travel to Egypt from the UK appeared to be returning to normal after four years of disruption.

Industry analyst GfK reported Egypt in the top-five biggest growth markets for the current winter season at the start of this year.

And sales to Egypt in the first full week of January were up 11% year on year, according to GfK.
