THE International Air Transport Association is claiming some of the ticket conditions the Office of Fair Trading wants dropped are drawn up to help protect passengers not hinder them (Travel Weekly June 14).
IATA, in its response to the OFT’s demand that unfair conditions be dropped, said rules on transparency, third-party ticket sales and price guidelines were justified.
The OFT has included these conditions in its recommendation to IATA. The association also said the European Commission had found many of the OFT’s complaints were ruled fair in 1997.
IATA has until next week to reply to the OFT demands and four weeks to act on them.
The Air Transport Users’ Council director-general Philip Martin instigated the OFT probe after failing to secure concessions from IATA and the EC.
