Airbuses to join new fleet

AIRBUS aircraft will be part of Air Jamaica’s expanded fleet within the next two years.

The airline currently has 15 jets, but it is planning additions to meet route expansion. More A340s will come be added for extra European services.

The carrier took delivery of its first long-haul A340 last month in order improve UK services. One more is planned for next year, but if the goal of launching Manchester, Germany, France and Italy flights is reached, the airline will then order more long-haul A340s.

Air Jamaica already has eight A320/321s and four A310s. However, more A320s will replace the A310 aircraft.

The A320s will also replace two MD-80s by 2001 to then give the airline a fleet made up exclusively of the European-made aircraft. Chief executive Chris Zacca said Airbus had been chosen because the carrier believed its aircraft were more efficient than those of Boeing.
