Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has hinted that he expects Labour MPs to oppose a third runway at Heathrow.

In a memo to senior members of his Shadow Cabinet, Corbyn has reportedly warned that the development could worsen the government’s “dreadful record on air quality”.

The Independent reports that Corbyn has called for Labour to make air pollution a key campaign issue and has also linked the planned airport expansion at Heathrow with the scandal over polluting diesel cars

A party source was quoted as saying: “Jeremy is clear that he expects Labour to now oppose a third runway at Heathrow. It is now up to the government to decide what to do.”

Corbyn also campaigned against Heathrow expansion during the Labour leadership contest.

The news is another blow to Heathrow and comes just days after rival London mayoral candidates Zac Goldsmith and Sadiq Khan also spoke out against expansion at Heathrow airport.
