Increase in traffic leads to delays at Stansted and Luton

DELAYS at Stansted and Luton Airports are getting worse, according to latest Civil Aviation Authority figures.

In 1998, Stansted’s scheduled delays dropped to an average of 17mins from 11mins in 1997, while charter times rose to 42mins instead of 31mins. Luton’s delays went from 16mins to 21mins for scheduled and from 26mins to 36mins for charter. Both airports have increased traffic significantly over the last 12 months which has contributed to the decline. Gatwick improved its delays to 14mins for scheduled and 37mins charter, up from 16mins and 46mins respectively in 1997. Other UK airports covered by the CAA report, including Heathrow, London City, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle reported near unchanged times.

Average delays at UK airports last year were 13mins for scheduled services and 36mins for charter services.
