Independent travel agent wins new business of the year accolade

Independent travel agent Cumbria Travel has been named New Business of the Year at the CN Group Business Awards 2016 after a strong year of growth.

Cumbria Travel, founded in Whitehaven by Leanne Gaythwaite and Patricia Rickerby in January 2015 as a member of Barrhead Travel Services Ltd, aims to offer a “truly customised approach for customers”.

The pair have more than 40 years of travel experience between them.

The business has recorded a 50% year-on-year increase in turnover and is opening its second store in Workington in January 2017 and has already recruited four new members of staff.

Rickerby said: “It was a fantastic surprise and extra special to get honoured by our local business peers.

“Being part of Brilliant Travel and the Barrhead Travel group has been instrumental in our success. From continuous business guidance and shared knowledge, to the use of its state-of-the-art booking software, the support has been invaluable as we’ve moved forward.”

Jet2 Holidays recently named Cumbria Travel as best newcomer to the market.

Rickerby added: “Our first couple of years have flown by and we’re over the moon with what we’ve achieved so far – it has exceeded all of our expectations.”
