Greece on track for record year despite Kosovo crisis

With the approach of the new season, which starts at the beginning of May, I would like to send my thanks to the UKtravel industry for its efforts to promote Greece for 1999 and for making it the most popular destination for this year.

I understand from the statistics on current booking levels that Greece is on course to achieve a record year, with UKvisitors set to exceed even the 2.4m of 1994.

However over the last few days, due to the crisis in Kosovo, I have become aware of a hesitation among travel agents to sell packages to Greece. The reality of thesituation is that from the onset of NATOmilitary action, thepolicy of Greece has been one of neutrality.

Greece is a member of NATOand the EU but as a Balkan country our primary concern is to support peace negotiations for the area.

From a customer service point of view, I would like to underline the fact that this year, tourists will really feel the benefits of Greece’s recent push to improve itsinfrastructure.

Billions of drachmas have been ploughed intoupgrading airports, ports, marinas and many other tourist services.

I would like to assure the UKtravel industry that there is no risk involved in selling packages to Greece and I would ask that you continue to encourage your clients to visit and enjoy the mostbeautiful country in the Mediterranean.
