For those who want to explore Bavaria by car, the region has a number of signposted tourist routes.

The Romantic Road: Bavaria’s best-known tourist route stretches over 350 km, commencing in Wurzburg, best known for its Residenz Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then passing through the medieval, walled town of Rothenburg ob de Tauber before reaching Fssen, with the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein nearby.

The Route of Emperors and Kings: this route also starts in Wurzburg, passes through Bamberg, where the Old Town is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, continuing via Nuremberg and Regensburg to Passau, on the confluence of three rivers.

The Bavarian Alps Route: running from the lakeside resort of Lindau to the winter sports area of Berchtesgaden, this scenic tour includes the three medieval castles built by Bavaria’s eccentric King Ludwig II – Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee.
