Late application forces Air Namibia to axe Windhoek plans

AIRNamibia has dropped direct flights to Windhoek because it put in its application for slots too late.

Instead it will offer thrice-weekly connections from Heathrow through Frankfurt from March 30.

Managing director Dr Jaafar Ahmad said: “In the short term, we have had to change the schedule, mainly due to the constraints resulting from our late application. However, long term we will reposition Air Namibia as more competitive.”

Ahmad said the thrice-weekly direct and one-stop combination will return next winter. One of the thrice-weekly flights from March 30 will be on an Air Namibia Boeing 747 instead of a B767 to give 30% extra seating.

The other two will be in conjunction with British Midland and Lufthansa to put passengers on their services to connect with twice-weekly Windhoek flights from Frankfurt.

This gives Air Namibia a thrice-weekly one-stop operation from the UK to match its current service which is two direct flights and one through Frankfurt.
