New england: family market by Alan Moore
Country comfort: self-catering lodges and homesteads in areas like Vermont are a popular choice
Country comfort: self-catering lodges and homesteads in areas like Vermont are a popular choiceNEW ENGLAND may not rival Florida for its familiar beach and theme park holidays but it is gaining a reputation for being a good summer family destination.
New England Country Homes product manager Sue Norrington-Davies said: “The region offers many themed attractions which, with its excellent beaches, makes it a very family-orientated destination.
“These include StoryLand in New Hampshire, the year-round SantaLand in Vermont and the Desert of Maine in Freeport, with its hidden houses.
“Cape Cod is also very popular for families, who like to take boat trips out to the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, as well as go whale-watching,” she said.
She added that more teenagers, as well as adults, are attracted to the discount shopping outlets for designer clothes, which are dotted throughout New England.
A growing number of operators are offering motorhomes, as well as car rental, for self-drive itineraries, which gives families greater flexibility to do their own thing. But more traditional accommodation is also a big attraction in the region.
Families can book a stay in one of many historic coastal or mountain resorts or lodge independently in a holiday home beside one of New England’s many spectacular lakes.
The popularity of self-catering homes and country lodges set in their own grounds, with spectacular views of the coast and countryside, has also added to the appeal of New England, especially for families travelling together.
Equally, many country and mountain resort lodges and hotels cater specifically for families, featuring entertainment and special-interest programmes for children of all ages.
Operators are also starting to include family deals such as free child accommodation. New England Vacations offers this in Boston, Vermont and Maine, for example.
New England Vacations managing director Richard Wimms said: “These are standard rooms with two double beds and are in good locations. We will be making more of a play for them next year.
“However, there is a big increase in demand from families for self-catering in Cape Cod. The resort is very central, it’s easy to get around and has plenty of great beaches and activities for children.”
