Agent Diary: ‘Losing long-standing clients reminded me how important travel is’

Do we realise the impact that we have made on our clients’ lives, asks Ponders Travel’s Clare Dudley.

I wonder if we ever realise the impact that we have made on our clients’ lives over the years that we have been selling holidays.

Now that is quite a statement in itself, isn’t it?

But I am reflecting on what has been a few months of sadness here at Ponders Travel, as we have lost quite a few of our long-standing clients.

Special gent

As an example, we’ve lost a dear gentleman who was 96 years old and who had been booking holidays with us for more than 10 years. He had travelled on many of our escorted tours up until the ripe old age of 93.

He was such a special client that he had, in fact, been on holiday with me. As he was in a wheelchair, he couldn’t go on holiday alone, so we offered to take him with us!

I was taken aback when the funeral details arrived and I was asked to speak about his travel at his wake

We got to know him well and feel the family’s pain knowing that he has now gone.

I was taken aback when the funeral details arrived and I was asked to speak about his travel at his wake and to reveal a story or two about some of the funny moments we shared.

What a privilege it was to have been asked and how wonderful that, as he leaves this world, many are reminded of how important and special travelling is to people.

This highlighted to me that what we do as a job provides so much joy to others.

Artistic lady

Another lady who had been on a few of our escorted departures had the horrific motor neurone disease.

Last year we took her to Blarney Castle in Kerry as part of a UK and Ireland cruise.

At that stage, she was in her wheelchair but could still do many things, one of which was taking part in an art class on board.

Her daughter came into the shop with the most beautiful painting that her mum had done, saying she wanted me to have it as a thank you

I loved watching her as she painted with such ease and passion.

When she passed away just a few weeks ago, her daughter came into the shop with the most beautiful painting that her mum had done, saying she wanted me to have it as a thank you for enabling her to have that holiday.

As I am sure you can imagine, there were tears. It is now a treasured piece in our shop and brings back memories of this lovely lady to all in our team.

Cruise lover

Most recently, my Uncle Nick left us after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.

I was surprised but happy to hear he was laid to rest in his Star Clippers polo shirt.

Sailing on what he referred to as his “beloved” Star Clippers was his favourite form of travel and really was a highlight of his lifelong travels.

Knowing we have a hand in making sure clients enjoy every holiday really is a pleasure and one I hope never to take for granted

To see photos of him on his ‘order of service’ on his travels, and knowing that part of his life brought him so much happiness and that we had arranged all this, gives me a great sense of joy.

This proposal had a hitch

I’d like to use this space to warn you all about a scam that has, sadly, caught me out, to the tune of £2,500. It appears several other travel agents have been caught out too. The company is offering leads for people planning their weddings and a trial is offered.

But, without warning, the company takes money from you and, despite our best efforts to get the money refunded, all attempts are failing. If anyone wants to know more, please let me know, as I will be happy to hopefully help at least one of you to not get scammed in the same way that we have been.
