BA and Virgin Atlantic suspend flights to and from Tel Aviv

British Airways has suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv due to safety fears after one of its aircraft was forced to turn back.

Virgin Atlantic has also stopped flying the route from Heathrow but plans to resume just one of two daily frequencies from Sunday (October 15).

BA confirmed the news after one one of its aircraft bound for the Israeli capital was diverted and had to return to Heathrow just as it was about to land at Ben Gurion Airport on Wednesday because of security concerns.

Customers are being offered alternative flights or dates, or full refunds.

In a statement, BA said: “Safety is always our highest priority and following the latest assessment of the situation we’re suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv.

“We’re contacting customers booked to travel to or from Tel Aviv to apologise for the inconvenience and offer options including a full refund and rebooking with another airline or with British Airways at a later date. We continue to monitor the situation in the region closely.”

Virgin Atlantic’s daily evening departure from Heathrow to Tel Aviv has been cancelled until October 28, while a morning flight has been suspended until Sunday.

The airline said: “The safety and security of our customers and our people are our number one priority and our flying programme to Israel remains under constant review. We would advise anyone booked to travel to check their flight status on the website before travelling to the airport.

“If your flight has been cancelled and you are away from home, we will offer reimbursement for hotel accommodation, and transport to and from the hotel, in addition to meals and refreshments.”

Other airlines including EasyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air are among airlines to have already halted flights to Tel Aviv after Hamas launched a wave of attacks on Israel over the weekend.

Earlier this week the UK warned against all but essential travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories amid deadly conflict in the region.
