Conditions in La Palma are “extremely safe” following the volcanic eruption on the island which began in September, according to the island’s minister of tourism Yaiza Castilla..
Speaking at World Travel Market, Castilla said: “We have been impacted in terms of tourism because there have been some cancellations. It’s a natural phenomenon, and there has been the need for safety precautions particularly in the beginning.”
But she added that tourists have come from other parts of the Canary Island and mainland Spain to see the volcanic activity.
“What we’re talking about is 20% of the island that’s affected but the conditions are extremely safe,” she said. “The area affected is closed off and the hotels, flats, villas, paths are available for people to enjoy the marvellous attractions we have on La Palma.”
In addition to core markets including families, Castilla said British tourists were increasingly visiting the Canary Islands for its nature and familiarity.
“Perhaps owing to the different lockdowns people have suffered, just like us people are wanting to visit other countries, so they want to go somewhere safe, which is what we offer,” she added.
While the number of British visitors to the Canary Islands “did not meet expectations” this summer, Castilla said: “The trend in terms of the British market is one of improvement.”
