EasyJet sets out to tackle cabin crew stereotyping

A new campaign designed to tackle outdated stereotyping of jobs in the airline industry has been created by EasyJet.

The initiative by the budget airline is part of a recruitment drive to hire more than 1,000 new cabin crew this year.

The carrier is encouraging people to switch careers with an advertising push featuring a former dental nurse, an optician, chef, opera singer, radio presenter and a Paris police officer.

The latest activity follows the airline’s drive last year to encourage people over the age of 45 to consider a career as cabin crew.

The number of over-45s flying with easyJet as crew has increased by 28% since then.

As part of the new recruitment campaign, easyJet polled 2,000 UK adults about the job of cabin crew, which revealed there are still widely held misconceptions about the role.

The research found that three quarters of those polled believe that cabin crew is typically a role for women.

Two in five men said they would not consider doing the job as a result.

More than three quarters (76%) surveyed also believe being cabin crew is only for those aged 18 to 25 years old.

Director of cabin services Michael Brown said: “At easyJet our people are at the heart of everything we do, and our cabin crew play such an important part of that, taking care of a quarter of a million customers flying with us every single day – and there’s a good reason they are famous for their warm welcome and excellent service.

“All our brilliant crew who are part of this new campaign are the perfect example of how the skills you can learn in all walks of life makes being cabin crew a fantastic new opportunity for everyone, so we want to encourage even more people like them to join us.”
