Heathrow calls in extra staff due to self-isolation requirements

Heathrow has called in additional security staff at Terminal 5 after self-isolation requirements caused short-staffing and congestion.

The BBC reported on Monday morning that more than 100 security guards had been required to self-isolate, with passengers using social media to vent their frustration at the resulting “total chaos”.

A statement subsequently issued by the airport confirmed the issues but said operations at the terminal were now back to normal.

A spokesperson said: “Earlier today we experienced some passenger congestion in Terminal 5 departures, due to colleagues being instructed to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace.

“We have activated additional team members to assist passengers with their journeys and the operation has now returned to normal. We apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused.”
