Jet2 suspends Catania flights after airport fire

Jet2 has cancelled flights until the end of the week after a fire at Catania airport in Sicily.

The airline hopes to restart its flying programme to the Italian island airport on Friday (August 4).

In an update issued on Sunday, Jet2 said: “Unfortunately, the fire at Catania airport has caused severe damage to the terminal building, significantly impacting operations.”

Flights from July 26 to August 3 have been suspended with the airline saying it has been “working hard to make other arrangements”.

The carrier added: “These flights have unfortunately been withdrawn/cancelled, please be assured that if you are a Jet2.com flight only booking communication will be sent to the details on your booking to provide you with your options.

“If you are on a Jet2holiday due to return during this date range, our resort team will be in contact with details of your revised return flights in due course.

“If this applies to your booking with us, although this is beyond our control, we would like to offer our sincere apologies for this.”

Customers will be updated if any further changes are made, according to Jet2.

Meanwhile, the company told holidaymakers due to travel to the north of Rhodes from today (Monday) onwards, that “we want to assure everyone that hotels, villas, and resorts are operating as normal”.

However, holidays to the neighbouring resorts of Gennadi and Kiotari in the fire-hit south of the island have been cancelled up to and including August 13.

“We are contacting affected customers to let them know how we can help them to arrange an alternative holiday or cancel with a full refund, which will of course be processed quickly,” Jet2 added.
