Newcastle airport reports surge in demand for half-term break

Newcastle airport expects more than 75,000 passengers over this February half-term period, as airlines have ramped up capacity to cater for demand.

The most popular destinations for the school holiday period this week are the Canary Islands, with 37 flights departing for the destination over the half-term holiday. Most passengers are heading to Tenerife, followed by Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

Winter ski resorts are also proving popular for families from the northeast, who are flying to Switzerland, Bulgaria, France, Austria and Italy.

Other popular destinations include mainland Spain, Dubai, Turkey and Egypt, while city breaks on offer feature the likes of Rome, Krakow, Wroclaw, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf.

The most popular long-haul destination is the US, with connections via Heathrow, Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt to airports in Orlando and New York.

Nick Jones, chief executive at Newcastle airport, said: “Our airline partners have reacted to the strong demand for travel from the region by investing in additional capacity from Newcastle for 2022.

“February has seen the restart of flights to many destinations, including Hurghada, Faro and Rome, and we look forward to seeing further flights operating to even more destinations as we head into the spring and the summer season.

“We have been working hard to prepare for the increase in passengers that we expect to see between now and the summer season.”
