Travel disruption warnings issued ahead of Storm Ciarán

Jersey and Guernsey airports have been forced to close as Storm Ciarán is forecast to bring severe weather to the Channel Islands tomorrow (Thursday).

Local carrier Blue Islands has suspended all flights on November 2 as a result.

Most services are expected to operate as normal today but with some schedule changes, including the cancellation of a Southampton-Guernsey service and one between the two islands.

Departures between Jersey and Bristol have also been brought forward.

The airline said that Friday services are planned to operate based on the current forecast.

“The safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority,” Blue Islands said as it offered free flight changes .

Guernsey-based Aurigny confirmed that the island’s airport would be shut on Thursday, with “likely disruptions” this afternoon and evening.

The airline said: “As you may be aware, the Channel Islands are anticipating the arrival of Storm Ciarán, which is expected to bring significant weather disruptions throughout Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.

“In light of this developing situation, we recognise some customers may not wish to travel during this period. Therefore we are offering flexible options for those who have bookings with us from Wednesday at 12 noon until Thursday at 9pm.”

Brittany Ferries warned of weather-related delays or cancellations today and particularly on Thursday.

Amber severe weather warnings for wind have been issued by the Met Office ahead of Storm Ciarán moving in on Wednesday night.

Damaging gusts of wind and stormy seas are expected in southern parts of the UK with travel disruption likely in some areas.

The Met Office warned that roads, bridges and railway lines may close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights.

Power cuts could occur and affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

“There is potential for large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties,” the alert added.
