New Uniworld ship christened in Portugal

New Uniworld ship Sao Gabriel has been christened at a special ceremony on the Douro River by the line’s director of hotel operations.

Joke De Bruyn, a Uniworld employee since 2009, joined the line’s president and chief executive Ellen Bettridge at the event, where speeches were given and there was a performance by a local university.

The 100-passenger Sao Gabriel is one of four new ships to enter the fleet this year. Bettridge travelled to Portugal from Italy, where she sailed on another new ship La Venezia, formerly known as River Countess.

She said: “This is only the beginning for us. It’s been a journey, but after recently setting sail in Italy and now Portugal, we’re looking forward to continuing this momentum with the restart of our itineraries in France and Central Europe next month.”

Sao Gabriel’s current itinerary is Portugal, Spain & The Douro River Valley departing from Porto to Lisbon and lasting 11 days.
