The second Sphere class ship for Princess Cruises has taken to the water for the first time as construction continues.
The 4,300-passenger Star Princess was floated out at an an Italian ship yard where building work will continue to complete the ship in time to enter service in autumn 2025.
Sister ship Sun Princess, also built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February following a delayed delivery, and was showcased to UK agents in Southampton on Sunday.
The 178,000-ton Star Princess will also be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Third engineer Chiara del Vecchio, who works on board Sun Princess, served as madrina in the float out ceremony, becoming the first member of the line’s technical team to hold the role.
Princess Cruises president John Padgett said: “Today is a celebration of teamwork, craftsmanship, and innovation.
“Star Princess is the second ship in our new Sphere class, and now as she prepares to take to the water for the first time it is a testament to the incredible dedication and skill of the entire shipyard team.
“Fincantieri has again turned vision into reality, building on the success of her sister ship – Sun Princess, which has already captured the hearts of our guests with its elegance and cutting-edge design.
“Together, we are creating amazing machines that will inspire adventure and deliver unforgettable experiences for all who sail with us for decades to come.”
