Demand for Africa remains high despite restrictions

The African Travel and Tourism Association (Atta) has reported more than 50% of consumers want to travel to Africa as soon as travel restrictions are lifted.

More than 2,500 people responded to the trade association’s survey between July and September.

More than a quarter (26%) said they have not booked their Africa trip yet because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, while 35% have used the time to research and make plans for their next holiday.

Flexible booking terms and ensuring they were double jabbed were the among the main priorities before booking for those polled in the survey.

Atta managing director Kate Kenward said: “The results from the first Atta Travel Trends have demonstrated to our members that there is a huge amount of pent-up demand for Africa and the experiences the continent has to offer.

“We look forward to conducting this global barometer each year to examine trends and broaden our members understanding of their target audience.

“It’s no surprise that safaris and wildlife scored the highest on the list of favourite vacation activities in this survey, but it was interesting to see that travellers to Africa are also very interested in cultural experiences, beaches, history and cities which the destination offers in abundance.”
