Hays Travel claims retail first with immersive in-store screen

Hays Travel has claimed a travel retail first with the debut of immersive technology to create “realistic” simulations of land, cruise and experiential holidays in its stores.

The chain said its Teesside Park branch is believed to be the first travel agency in the country to install the screens, which offer wall-and-floor projections “to bring holiday experiences to life for customers”.

Called ‘Beyond the Brochure’, the virtually augmented wall was installed as part of a major branch refurbishment and expansion.

Jane Schumm, Hays Travel retail director, said: “We’re now two years into our three-year refurbishment strategy and this is our most technically advanced refit to date.

“As well as making one of our best-performing branches more appealing and welcoming, our ‘Beyond the Brochure’ wall is an incredibly exciting addition that really gives the branch the wow factor.

“We’ve already seen exceptional results from Libby Gray, our manager, and the whole Teesside Park team in their new environment.”

More screens will be installed initially in new shops and newly refurbished branches.

Furthermore, “a number of suppliers” have expressed interest to showcase their products, but no exact timeline has currently been agreed, she added.

The refurbishment of Teesside Park involved extending the shop to increase the number of selling stations from 10 to 14.

The new layout and materials improve the branch’s energy efficiency and flow, while a faster network means agents can help customers more quickly.

Branch manager Libby Gray said: “The team love the new branch and think it’s warm, bright, inviting and innovative – you can feel their enthusiasm when meeting customers; it’s a great atmosphere.

“We’ve booked some amazing cruises since the start of January and our new immersive wall is incredible.

“It really helps people to visualise themselves on board, exploring the deck plan to choose their cabin, and seeing which restaurants they want to book for a special dinner.

“We’ve sold several holidays thanks to the ship tour of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas assets, which really brings the experience of being on board to life.”
