Tui settles claims arising from Tunisia terrorist attack

Tour operator Tui has reached a settlement with families of holidaymakers caught up in the Tunisia beach terror attack in 2015.

A total of 38 people, including 30 British Tui customers, were killed by a gunman on the beach outside and inside the Hotel Rui Imperial Marhaba, with dozens more injured.

Relatives of the victims had launched a bid to claim damages from the travel giant and instructed law firm Irwin Mitchell to start civil proceedings.

A joint media statement on behalf of Tui and Irwin Mitchell said the tragic events of June 26, 2015, “shocked and devastated us all and changed the lives of those affected forever”.

The statement said Tui has “worked collaboratively” with the claimants and Irwin Mitchell “to reach a settlement without admission of liability or fault and in recognition of the wholly exceptional circumstances of the case, and in the hope that it will go some way to assisting the claimants”.

It added: “Tui appreciates how difficult it must be to move on from such a horrific incident but hopes today will provide the opportunity for those affected to start to do so.”

The statement said Tui has “always expressed heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those caught up in the terrorist attack that day and continue to extend deepest sympathy”.

“The claimants have fought tirelessly to understand how the attack happened and to seek to ensure that lessons have been learned so that other families are not affected by similar tragedy,” said the statement.

In January 2021, Irwin Mitchell said that the High Court in London was due hear the trial of claims by more than 80 victims of the attack in February 2022.

The civil case was brought on behalf of 83 victims of the attack following the inquest into the deaths of 30 British holidaymakers killed by the gunman.
