Travel Weekly has sailed on Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Sun Princess, which is the largest in the line’s fleet.
The LNG-powered vessel, with a capacity of 4,300 passengers, is currently sailing Mediterranean itineraries before transferring across the Atlantic.
News reporter Andrew McQuarrie boarded in Civitavecchia, near Rome, for a trip to Gibraltar over the Easter weekend.
He recorded a video tour of the ship, which included an interview with Captain Craig Street.
Street said: “It’s a real honour and pleasure to be the captain of the biggest ship in our fleet and the biggest ship ever built in Italy – and the first of our ships to be powered by LNG and Azipod propulsion.”
The ship, the first in the line’s Sphere class, has 29 food and beverage venues, while entertainment spaces include The Dome, magic-themed Spellbound and O’Malley’s Irish Pub.
Adult-only area The Sanctuary provides a place for relaxation on Deck 18, and the Lotus Spa is spread across two decks for the first time on a Princess Cruises ship.
Sun Princess’ maiden voyage was scheduled to depart on February 8, but it was pushed back to February 28 because additional work had to be carried out on the vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone.
Travel Weekly joined the initial portion of a 10-day Grand Mediterranean itinerary that departed on March 29.
