Balearic Islands tighten Covid rules for bars

The Balearic government has approved restrictions on bars shortly after British tourists began to return to the autonomous Spanish region.

In parts of Magaluf, Majorca, and Sant Antonio, Ibiza, the number of people who are allowed to sit at a table in a bar has been limited to ten outdoors and six indoors.

There will also be capacity limits of 100 indoors and 200 outdoors and closing time will be 2am.

The decree therefore limits ‘free’ alcohol in all-inclusive hotels to meal times. Shops in these areas cannot sell alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am.

Tourism minister Iago Negueruela told a press conference on Monday that these measures are being introduced in order to contain the spread of the virus.

Negueruela appealed to young people in the Balearics to show responsibility and to comply with Covid measures and municipal bylaws that prohibit street drinking and gatherings.

The Balearic Islands joined the UK’s green list on Wednesday last week, meaning those returning to the UK no longer have to self-isolate. England are due to play in the European Championships semi-final against Denmark this Wednesday.
