Pristine beaches, charming harbour towns and verdant scenery await in this rugged region of Greece

The Epirus region in northwest Greece is an untouched paradise sandwiched between the shimmering Ionian Sea and the towering Pindos mountains. It’s the epitome of natural beauty, with unspoiled beaches and coves, verdant mountainous countryside and emerald‑green waters.

For clients in search of sun, sea and sand this year, the Epirus region is home to lesser-visited but authentically Greek hotspots. Indulge in island-like mentality alongside locals in the traditional harbour towns or explore some of the prominent historic sites. Epirus is also a top cultural destination with five ancient theatres – Dodona, Nicopolis, Cassope, Amvracia and Gitana – and the archaeological sites that surround them, also known as the Ancient Theatres of Epirus Cultural Route.

Whether it’s visiting the scenic beaches of Syvota, the cobbled streets of Parga or the ancient monuments of Preveza, the natural beauty of Epirus is sure to give your clients a trip to remember.

Preveza

With charming beaches, lush green surroundings and a traditional old town, Preveza is a quintessential Greek destination. It lies at the mouth of the Amvrakikos Gulf and is just five miles from Nikopolis, one of the most important ancient archaeological sites in northwest Greece. There’s an island-like atmosphere in Preveza, where the warm, sunny days are best spent relaxing on one of its beaches.

Afterwards, head to the harbour or the amusement park at the water’s edge before winding through the streets on the hunt for a local taverna. History abounds in this region and Nikopolis, a key ancient city founded in 31BC, is home to remains that can still be seen today, including the Odeon and a theatre from the first century AD. Its three castles provide visitors with a slice of its more recent past.

The 19th‑century Pantokratoras Castle, which sits at the mouth of the Gulf, is best visited later in the day, as the sunset views are spectacular. Just outside of the town centre are 12 established hiking routes, which provide an excellent way to explore some of the natural scenery.

Syvota

The beaches in Syvota are unlike any other. Whether your clients are looking for beaches with watersports and beachside cafes, or deserted stretches of sand tucked away in hidden coves with nothing but the calm waters for company, both can be found in Syvota.

Islets off the coast dot the horizon with lush, green landscapes; it’s no wonder Syvota is known as the Ionian fjord. One of the islets can even be reached on foot over a strip of sand. This is where Bella Vraka beach is located, one of the best-known in the region.

If your clients are able to part with the alluring beaches on the mainland, suggest they rent a boat and explore some of the surrounding coastline. They may even find their own private cove waiting for them.

Parga

Journey an hour north of Preveza to find the tranquil town of Parga. Though smaller in size, it’s by no means any less enriching for those looking for an authentic Greek getaway. The colourful houses clinging to the hillside make for some Instagramworthy shots, while boutique shops and cafes can be found in the harbour town’s cobbled streets.

The historical site of Necromanteion of Acheron is 22km south of Parga. It was an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Persephone and Hades. The site was believed to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. Views across the Ionian Sea are dotted with islets off the coast. Panagia, the largest, is reached by swimming from Krioneri Beach.

A small white chapel can be found here overlooking the blue-emerald sea. Sitting at a local restaurant by the port, cocktail in hand, is the best way to enjoy the sea views. The islands of Paxos and Antipaxos are even reachable by boat from Parga’s port and can be explored on a day trip.
