Evans raises awareness of environmental issues

Former Going Places deputy managing director Paul Evans is using his year’s gardening leave to raise money for Friends of Conservation.

Evans, who will join First Choice when his leave finishes, is contacting all the major travel companies to contribute to the fundraising arm of the charity, the Travel and Tourism Conservation Committee.

TTCCchairman Simon Beeching of Wexas International said the travel industry must invest in protecting the environment now or pay the price later through crippling taxes.

The Government’s recent white paper ‘A New Deal for Transport’ raises the prospect of environmental levies and an end to tax exemptions on aviation fuel.

“If this should happen there will be an increase in the price of a package holiday which will make the issue of Air Passenger Duty pale into insignificance,” said Beeching.

“It’s far better for us to take the initiative and demonstrate that we as an industry are putting something back into the environment rather than waiting for the Government tocome in and do it for us,” he added.
