Family illness forces Bennett to step down from AITO role

Former ABTApresident Colin Trigger is to become chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators after John Bennett was forced to step down last week.

Bennett cannot devote as much time to the association as his brother’s ill health has forced an increase in work commitments. Bennett is a director of his brother’s courier company and has taken a more active role during his brother’s illness. However he hopes to remain on the AITOCouncil.

Trigger, who is currently AITOvice-chairman and chairman of Scantours, is expected to be voted into the post at the AITO Council meeting to be held tomorrow.

At AITO, Trigger will continue to raise the profile of the association through the creation of a consumer brand. Plans will be discussed at the AGM on Wednesday.

He also plans to strengthen links between AITO and the Campaign for Real Travel Agents.

Meanwhile, retail agent Edwin Doran has replaced Christopher Kirker as CARTA chairman. Doran, of Edwin Doran Travel, said: “We are planning a total revamp of training to ensure that agents have incentives to attend sessions regularly.

“We also plan to offer agents four opportunities a year to meet face-to-face with the specialist tour operators in AITO.”
