Operatorscautious about summer 2000

OPERATORS appear apprehensive at the state of the market in the approach to the peak season, with less than three weeks to go before the start of the school summer holidays.

JMC managing director Simon Vincent said: “July is a little soft at the moment. I would like it to be a bit firmer and my biggest fear is we discount peak season when we don’t need to.”

Thomas Cook commercial director Mike Beaumont said while July bookings were looking reasonable, August was still in the balance.

“It’s that nail-biting time of year and we’re not going to know the outcome of the summer for some time. I don’t think it will be a bumper year but it won’t be a disaster either.”

Airtours has launched an end-of-season clearance sale featuring £99 holidays between August and October.
