Pre-existingillness covered by new service

A NEW medical screening system launched on the Internet means agents can now arrange travel insurance for clients with pre-existing medical conditions.

MediCover, designed for those who cannot get standard travel insurance cover because of their condition, went live at the beginning of the month.

It allows agents to input a client’s medical condition, answer questions and receive a quote. They will also be paid commission of around 20%.

While this type of policy gives agents the chance to earn money – they have to ask about clients’ medical conditions.

Perry Gamble general manager Lorinda Perry said: “There is a dual problem with medical conditions as agents don’t want to ask personal questions and people do not want to answer.”

Intermediaries use various methods to encourage people to declare medical conditions.

Citybond uses a freephone helpline operated by International Medical Rescue. Clients will be asked questions about their condition and the level of risk will then be assessed. Extrasure uses a similar system, while Primary uses HealthCheck. The Travel Protection Group has a helpline, but it will accept a GP’s signature saying a patient is fit to travel.

Peace of mind: pre-existing illnesses can now be covered
