JMC Majorcan hotel at centre of health scare

JMC has said it will continue to send clients to a Majorcan hotel that has been the subject of a number of health scares.

Consumer watchdog Travelwatch claims it has received complaints from customers threatening legal action after falling ill while staying at the Club Aguamar resort.

The illnesses have been blamed on a bug called cryptosporidium. It has a longer incubation period than salmonella but has similar symptoms.

JMChas received medical confirmation of seven cases of the bug since May but the operator says there is insufficient evidence to blame the hotel.

However, JMC has said that customers who are booked to stay at the hotel can change to another property if they are worried. If an alternative is not available, holidaymakers will not be charged if they then cancel their holiday.

It is not the first time the hotel has been involved in a health scare. In 1998 1,100 holidaymakers caught food poisoning while staying there (Travel Weekly April 5 1999).

JMC’s former brand Sunworld paid compensation to 500 of its clients who fell ill at that time.
