Health scare prompts FTOsafety review
THEFEDERATIONof Tour Operators may revise its health and safety guidelines for swimming pools after a health scare at a Majorcan resort used by JMC (Travel Weekly August 7).The operator has admitted that it tested the swimming pool at Majorcan hotel Club Aguamar three times before discovering it was the source of a bug called cryptosporidium.
FTO secretary-general Alan Flook said: “When the dust has settled, we will see what we can learn from this.”
Although the local public health authority suggests 22 holidaymakers have been hit by the bug, JMC is now facing a class action by at least 100 holidaymakers represented by Irwin Mitchell. The firm successfully represented nearly 700 holidaymakers against former JMC brand Sunworld following an outbreak of salmonella at the same hotel in 1998.
Out of 16,000 JMC customers who visit the hotel a year, there have been 55 cancellations and 300 transferrals to other hotels.
Deputy managing director Terry Williamson said JMC would not pull Club Aguamar from its programme.
