Thomson rules out Ibiza as winter option

THOMSON group brand manager Richard Nealon said he had considered introducing Ibiza as a winter destination this year, but decided the island would not be able to compete with rivals such as Majorca.

Nealon said major investment would be required before Ibiza could seriously hope to compete with the big players in the winter market.

He said: “We tried it a decade ago but it just didn’t sell. We also looked at the idea again last year but decided not to proceed.

“Ibiza hasn’t the infrastructure in place for the winter, or the weather, which tends to be quite variable.

“You also need a minimum number of hotels plus bars, cafés and restaurants to give the visitor a choice rather than booking them somewhere in the middle of a desert. The difference with Majorca is that it already has a developed infrastucture, including heating at most of its resort hotels. There are also things there for the people to do even when the sun doesn’t shine.

“There is still huge potential in Majorca to develop it further and that is something we want to continue with first.”

Potenital: resorts such as S’Argamassa Villas, Es Cana
